How e-bike chains, cogs and rings wear out
Chain Wear Notes explains what happens to the chain, cassette and chainrings on an e-bike. It covers how to tell when parts are worn, how chain stretch is measured, and how makers say to clean and lube them.
All the chain notes
Why an E-Bike Chain Can Wear Faster Than a Normal Bike ChainDoes the motor really make a chain wear out sooner? What the references say about motor force, dirt, lube and how long chains last.- What Chain Stretch Really MeansA "stretched" chain usually isn't stretched at all. See what wears inside the links and why longer spacing hurts the teeth.
How to Measure Chain Wear With a Ruler or a GaugeTwo ways to check a chain for wear, a metal ruler or a drop-in gauge, and what the readings mean for the chain and the sprockets.- Signs of a Worn Cassette and ChainringWhat worn sprocket teeth look like, and what skipping and clunking can point to, drawn from bike-repair references.
- Why Chain, Cassette and Chainring Often Wear TogetherCan you fit just a new chain? What the references say about when a chain alone is enough and when cogs and rings need replacing too.
Cleaning an E-Bike Chain Without Harming the Motor or BatteryWhat bike and e-bike makers say about cleaning a chain, keeping high-pressure water off the electrics, and drying before you lube.- Chain Lube Types and When Makers Say to Apply ThemThe main kinds of chain lube, how they differ, and what the saved references say about when to apply lube, plus one author's opinion on products to avoid.
